What Is Thrush?

Thrush is a common infection caused by fungal yeast called Candida Albican which can easily be treated. It is quite harmless but can be really uncomfortable and keep returning, this is known as 'recurrent thrush'. It is common for small amounts of candida to live on the skin and around the vaginal area. The immune system and harmless bacteria fight against candida, but there are times where the candida multiply and infect the vagina causing symptoms. The vagina is more vulnerable to the fungal yeast as it usually targets conditions where they are warm, moist and where air doesn’t reach. This infection is also prone to other body areas such as, the mouth, the groin and the nappy area in babies.

How Do I Know If I Have Thrush?

Thrush causes itching and swelling of the vagina along with a creamy white thick discharge (It can sometimes be watery). Thrush at times can cause urinating to be a painful process and the skin around vaginal area to be sore. Sometimes the mouth or tongue can become sore with white patches (this is known as oral thrush). Thrush often occurs following antibiotics.

How Can I Prevent Vaginal Thrush?

Washing the private parts with water (with aqueous cream) instead of strong soaps may be helpful. Looser fitting clothes may help allowing air to the private parts, as well as a course of timodine cream. Using a lubricant during intercourse may help (dryness of the vagina during sex may make you prone to thrush)

If you take antibiotics, you may wish to use an anti-fungal cream at the onset of symptoms. A small amount of live natural yoghurt put into the vagina is said to increase the acidity of the vagina and prevent recurrent thrush. Timodine cream is an effective way to treat thrush. If your partner has visible thrush on his foreskin or penis, then it is better to treat him too. If men get thrush, they should see a doctor to consider being checked for diabetes.
