What is hirsutism?

Hirsutism is when a woman suffers from extreme hair growth. The hair is usually quite thick and will appear really dark either on the upper lip or chin (face), neck, on the chest area, stomach, anal/genital and on your thighs.

What causes hirsutism?

When a woman has an excess amount of male sex hormones (androgens), hirsutism is caused. The most common androgen testosterone is a hormone which is found in men and enables the production of sperm and develops sexual characteristics. It can also be found in women however, in small quantities. Testosterone in women can have various influences such as have an effect on the menstrual cycle or fertility, there is also a possibility of increase in sex drive. There are also other androgens which soon become testosterone; these are known as dehydroepiandrosterone and androstenedione.  Women who have this condition will hair follicles that are overly stimulated due to the increased amount of testosterone in their body.  Researchers have noted that certain medication can cause cases of Hirsutism such as birth control pills or anabolic steroids used mainly by bodybuilders.  Androgens (male sex hormones) can also be produced due to other medications being used to treat conditions such as seizures, bipolar disorder or medications to treat mental health issues such as schizophrenia.

What are the symptoms and diagnosis for Hirsutism?

Hirsutism will generally show growth on the upper lip to begin, this can then follow to the chin and the side burns and in extreme cases the chest and stomach area.  In these extreme cases there has also been situations where hair has grown on the back area along with the shoulders.

If you feel you have this condition then you can contact your doctor who will check your hormone levels.  If these hormone levels are normal the chances you have this condition may be hereditary or genetics.  An imbalance of hormones could also result in other serious conditions such as ovarian tumours or problems with your adrenal glands.

What treatment is available?

There is not an actual cure for hirsutism however; there are many hair removal methods which may be helpful.   There are common methods that can be used to help remove the unwanted hair such as:

  • Waxing – can help reduce hair, growth, also make the hair thinner, but can be a painful process
  • Shaving – Although a quick and easy method this can make the hair grow back thicker and cause skin irritation
  • Laser hair removal – Can be very effective at removing hair, but can be very costly as it will take multiple sessions to permanently remove the hair

If you have sensitive skin some these treatment methods can cause irritation to the skin.  Contraceptive medication or pills have also been known to be effective in controlling hirsutism, however this only tends to be the case if you have yet to begin menopause.   Medicines2u provide a treatment called Vaniqa Cream, which can be ordered online today.
