What is Malaria?

Malaria is an extremely infectious disease caught from a bite by an infected mosquito which carries a parasite called plasmodium. Malaria will cause the infected party to have a very high fever, and flu like symptoms.  Malaria is considered to be life threatening if not treated quickly and precautions should be taken when travelling.  Malaria is common in tropical countries including parts of Asia, Africa and South America.  There are thought to be around 400 million malaria cases worldwide each year, malaria can be fatal and can kill if not treated with the proper medication.

What Causes Malaria?

Malaria is caused by a plasmodium parasite which is transmitted via mosquito bites.  The parasite enters your blood stream where it makes its way to your liver infecting red blood cells along the way.  Once infected the red blood cells will explode unleashing a new set of parasites in the body, causing flu like symptoms as well high temperature fevers.

It is highly recommended to take antimalarial tablets and any necessary travel vaccinations if you are travelling to an area where there is a high risk of malaria.
