High blood pressure can be a a concerning condition if not monitored or ignored.  Most people will not notice the rise in their blood pressure as it does not carry much symptoms however if not monitored or treated it can cause complications to your health.

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension is when your blood pressure is constantly higher than the recommended healthy level. You may not know that you have high blood pressure until you get measured as it doesn’t usually have any symptoms that are noticeable. Hypertension is a risk factor and if left untreated there is an increased chance of developing heart disease or stroke, there is also a possibility of developing other serious conditions. It is important to have your blood pressure checked regularly and to take the necessary measures should it be high.

Blood pressure is recorded in two figures and is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). The first reading is called systolic pressure; this is the pressure of the blood when the heart beats to pump blood out. The second reading is diastolic pressure; this shows how strong the arteries are resisting blood flow when the heart rests.

A normal blood pressure reading will show 130/80mmHG (130 being the systolic pressure and the 80 being the diastolic pressure)

If your blood pressure consistently reads 140/90mmHG or higher, this shows you have high blood pressure.

Who is most at risk in developing high bloody pressure?

As you get older, the risk of developing high blood pressure increases. There are no symptoms and the causes of hypertension are unclear however, it is recommended to make changes to your lifestyle to lower the risk of developing high blood pressure if you:
