What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a very common condition which affects people all over the world.  Diabetes is a condition that causes elevated blood sugar levels and has difficulty storing glucose, if not controlled accordingly it can have life threating implications.   Glucose predominately exists due to the food we consume, it is important for the body to have glucose as it provides the cells with necessary energy needed for the body.  Your body also produces a substance called insulin; insulin helps carry glucose around the body.   Diabetes will affect the amount of insulin being produced which in turn affects the glucose levels and the amount of sugar in the body, which can cause further health problems such as Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes.

What is Pre-Diabetes?

Pre-Diabetes is a condition where the glucose levels in the body or blood are elevated but not high enough to be referred to as Diabetes.  Pre-Diabetes can be managed and controlled via exercising and weight management, if left untreated it can have serious complications resulting in Type 2 Diabetes.

Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2.  The amount of people being affected by this disease is growing constantly with an expected 4 million people in the UK being diagnosed by the year 2030.  Blood sugar levels play a huge part in diabetes, if your levels are slightly higher than average you are more than likely to contract full blown diabetes if you do not adjust your health and lifestyle.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes also known as insulin dependent diabetes destroys all insulin producing cells in the body effectively increasing the glucose levels in your body.  This form of diabetes usually develops at a younger age and requires patients to live a healthy lifestyle where blood sugar and glucose levels are closely monitored on a regular basis.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is the most common in the UK, with 90% of patients who are diagnosed with diabetes having type 2.  Type 2 Diabetes is when the body cannot produce sufficient amounts of insulin or the body does not react to the insulin being produced.  Type 2 can usually be controlled with healthy living and exercising, insulin shots are not needed on a frequent basis.
