What is contraception?

Contraception is used to prevent conception or impregnation (pregnancy), there are many contraception methods that can be used which work in different ways. Contraception allows a woman to plan when and if she wants to have a baby. Contraception tries to prevent a man’s sperm reaching a woman’s egg or stopping egg production. The condom is the only form of contraception that helps protect partners from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). There are various contraceptive methods including the pill, implants, injections intrauterine device etc. There are many factors to take into consideration when choosing what method of contraception works best for you.

More about the pill...

Combined oral contraceptive pill is usually known as “the pill”. It contains two hormones, oestrogen and progestogen, these are artificial versions of what women produce naturally in their ovaries. The pill is known to work effectively by: Stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulating) by changing the hormone balance in the body The hormones in the pill make the lining of the womb thinner which essentially makes it difficult for a fertilised egg to attach to the uterus. The pill also makes it less likely for the sperm to enter the womb and reach an egg by thickening the mucus in the neck of the womb hence making it more difficult to conceive.

Some benefits of taking the pill...

First and foremost, it is very effective. Periods are usually regular and less painful and can ease premenstrual tension. It does not interfere with sexual intercourse. It reduces the risk of cancer of the ovary, colon and uterus. It may also reduce the risk of cysts in the ovary. It may improve acne in some women. It may reduce the risk of non-cancerous breast disease and pelvic infection.

What to watch out for...

Taking the pill does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections, therefore it is recommended to also use a condom. There is a possibility of temporary side-effects when starting the pill, these include headaches, mood changes, nausea and sometimes breast tenderness. If these side effects continue, it may be helpful to change to another type of pill. There may be a chance of unexpected bleeding from the vagina when taking the pill, spotting is common in the first few months. Before choosing what pill is convenient for you, you should discuss the benefits and risks of taking the pill with a doctor or nurse.
