What is Acid Reflux / Heartburn?

Acid Reflux (also known as Gastro-Oesophageal), is a condition where the lower oesophagus allows too much acid to be passed from your stomach into the oesophagus. This usually results in heartburn or chest pains. Though heartburn can be a very common symptom, it is not frequent. If you are experiencing the symptoms highlighted below on a frequent basis, the chances are you suffer from acid reflux.

When food is consumed it is passes down the oesophagus, acid is then produced in the stomach which helps in breaking down and digesting food. The stomach is a very complex system; it produces acid which can potentially be harmful to the stomach, but also makes mucus-like substances which neutralise the acid. Acid reflux tablets can reduce the amount of acid and relieve the problems associated with this. The stomach has a passage that allows food to pass through but closes to stop acid entering regions of the stomach and body where it could cause damage.

What Causes Acid Reflux?

The bottom of the oesophagus contains a muscle known as the sphincter which in effect controls the amount of acid being passed up to the oesophagus. Acid Reflux will usually occur when the Sphincter isn’t doing its job and allowing acid to be passed into the oesophagus region. There are certain factors that can result in the sphincter not doing its job correctly such as eating spicy food constantly, being unfit and unhealthy, and hiatus hernia (the stomach lifts up and pushes into the chest area). Acid reflux tablets can be used to put preventative measures in place which can suppress the effects of the condition.

What are the symptoms of Acid Reflux?

The most common symptoms of Acid Reflux include:

  • Heart burn, causing a burning pain in the chest which usually occurs after eating a meal
  • Difficulty swallowing food or liquids
  • Movement being restricted due to excessive pain
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach becoming bloated

What can I do to avoid Acid Reflux?

There are some simple steps than can be taken to help reduce Acid Reflux such as:

  • Stop Smoking – If you are a smoker and are experiencing heart burn or any other stomach discomfort then it is advisable to reduce the amount cigarettes you are smoking. Smoking causes the sphincter to relax more than normal, which is why some people feel digesting food easier after a smoke, but this carries a risk of allowing more acid to be passed into the oesophagus region, causing reflux.
  • Certain types of food and liquids – One of the obvious causes of reflux is the food we consume. Certain types of food and drink can be a catalyst to conditions such as Acid Reflux. Some patients may experience Reflux when consuming spicy or hot food, certain herbs and spices, excessive amounts of junk food such as crisps and chocolates, fizzy drinks, coffee and excessive amounts of alcohol.
  • Exercising and physical fitness – The benefits associated with keeping fit and healthy are profound, especially with conditions such as Acid Reflux. Being overweight can have a variety of health issues and acid Reflux is one of them. The increase in the stomach size puts a tremendous amount of pressure and increases the chances of acid being allowed into parts of the body where it should not be. Losing weight and keeping healthy will help reduce the symptoms of acid reflux and aid in a better lifestyle.
